The Pan-African High-Level Conference on Education (#PACE2018), was held by UNESCO in collaboration with African Union and the Government of Kenya on 25-29 April 2018 in Nairobi, Kenya, with the theme “Bridging Continental and Global Education Frameworks for the African We Want”.

CMIL-Kenya participated in the conference where Executive Director, Wallace Gichunge, made a presentation on media literacy as a tool for ensuring internet safety in schools. “In using the Internet in a safe way, a new set of literacies are needed to address the multitude of communication media in the wake of proliferating and emergent technologies,” said Mr. Gichunge.

He concluded that as countries in Sub-Saharan Africa undertake reforms of their education systems in response to global trends and the use of the Internet, it is important to mainstream media and information literacy to achieve the desired increase in the quality of schooling, and more critically, higher learning outcomes.

At the end of the conference, the Ministers of Education in Africa adopted the recommendation for integration of media and information literacy (MIL) within curricula and education policies in the ensuing Nairobi Declaration and Call for Action on Education.
